The Blackfyre family is a branch house of the Targaryens created when Aegon the Unworthy legitimized the bastard son Deamon he conceived with his sister Daena. Following the death of Aegon IV and Daeron’s coronation, Daemon sought to press his own claim to the throne and began the first Blackfyre Rebellion. Inevitably, Aegon IV eventually passed away, his swollen body literally rotting from the inside out as if the moral corruption had infected his own flesh. With Aegon dead, Daeron ascended to the throne and became Daeron II Targaryen, but the unworthy king played one final trick on his son.

According to various Targaryen timelines around the internet, Daenerys is a distant niece of Princess Rhaenyra. Sometimes called “Misery,” Mysaria starts out as a sex worker in King’s Landing but quickly becomes indispensable to her patron and lover Daemon as a source of information. Laena and Laenor have limited choices in their roles as heirs to the mighty House Velaryon.
But after Maegor's enigmatic demise, Aenys' son - Jaehaerys - succeeded to the throne by inciting an uprising against his oppressive uncle. Together with his sister-wives - Rhaenys and Visenya -he went to conquer six of Westeros' Seven Kingdoms. Most of his reign was dedicated to taking the Drone's principality, which failed and resulted in the death of Queen Rhaenys. The Great Spring Sickness, though, was no laughing matter, and it chewed through the Targaryen dynasty like a rabid dog, so when Daeron died, Aerys was next in line for the throne. Bookish and weak, Aerys was not exactly the ideal Westerosi king and his supposed asexuality made the matter of his succession extremely complicated. Daemon had another son, Haegon, who went into the family business of rebelling against the Targaryens. Led by Aegor Rivers (Yet another of Aegon IV’s bastards), the third Blackfyre Rebellion threatened the stability of the realm until Haegon I was slain and Rivers imprisoned. As the enemies of the Freehold fought for control of the Valyrian’s former empire, generations of Targaryens lived and died on Dragonstone. Gaemon the Glorious followed Aenar as the lord of Dragonstone, and in turn, his son Aegon (not that one) inherited the castle.
A deathbed misunderstanding leads her to push to have her son Aegon crowned as king after her husband, Viserys, dies. After the death of his wife during childbirth, Viserys remarries and has a son with Rhaenyra’s best friend, Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey, then Olivia Cooke). The Targaryen family tree is admittedly complicated—though compact thanks to the family’s penchant for incest. Aegon III and Viserys II Targaryen – Aegon III and Viserys II brought peace back to the Targaryen Dynasty following the Dance of Dragons. Aegon III was installed as king by supporters of his mother Rheanyra following her death, and Viserys II eventually ruled as his brother's Hand of the King.
Near the end of his life, with no clear heir apparent, he puts together a Great Council to decide which of his descendants will succeed him. Rhaenyra’s oldest son, Jacaerys (Leo Hart, and then Hary Collett) is supposed to inherit the throne after his mother. However, his dubious parentage will likely play a role in determining his future. Though ostensibly the son of Rhaenyra’s husband Laenor Velaryon, the audience knows that the couple have reached an agreement in which they can both have extramarital affairs because Laenor is gay. Alicent clearly suspects that Rhaenrya’s sons have a different father since she demands to inspect Rhaenyra’s baby immediately after the princess gives birth.
It’s a divisive move that he may come to regret later, but it’s a step toward progress for the women of Westeros. It’s also the closest the Targaryens will ever come to having a queen sit on the Iron Throne. As Game of Thrones fans know, Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen (or Khaleesi) played a major role in the hit series’ eight seasons.

Before the Baratheons (and the Lannisters behind the scenes) ruled over Westeros in Game of Thrones, there was King Aerys II, the last Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne. "The Mad King" was initially beloved during his peaceful reign, before he slowly became paranoid, erratic, and murderous (possibly due to the Targaryen tradition of inbreeding). After his execution of Ned Stark's father and brother during Robert's Rebellion, Aerys was betrayed by his hand, Tywin Lannister, and killed by Jamie Lannister. The reign of the Targaryens was over, but the lineage lived on through his two younger children Daenerys and Viserys, who were smuggled away to the Free Cities.
The two Targaryens with the best claim to the throne are his grandson, Viserys, and his granddaughter-slash-grandniece, Rhaenys. But because Westeros has never had a queen as ruler before, the council chooses Viserys to be the next ruler; thus he becomes Viserys I. Aegon II Targaryen (Ty Tennant, then Tom Glynn-Carney) arrives just in time to send the kingdom into further chaos as lords question why the Iron Throne would pass to Rhaenyra when the king finally has a son. As a teenager, though, Aegon seems to care little about who inherits the throne. Only when his mother Alicent points out that Rhaenyra will likely kill Aegon and his siblings to secure her place on the Iron Throne does the young boy seem to become invested in questions of succession. Aegon does eventually ascend the throne, but only after an episode is dedicated to learning about his depraved behavior among the people of Flea Bottom after he escapes the Red Keep.
With his dying breath, he legitimized his bastard children, creating the Blackfyre family in the process and sewing the seeds for future rebellions. Archmaester Vaegon, Jaehaerys’ last living son who had given up his claim when he became a maester, Prince Viserys Targaryen, and Laenor Velaryon, the grandson of Jaehaerys’ eldest son Aemon and son of his daughter Rhaenys. After establishing their kingdom, the siblings set out to make more Targaryens to ensure their house would always sit on the Iron Throne. Aegon supposedly preferred Rhaenys, his younger sister, as a wife to Visenya, and so the youngest of the siblings bore the king his first son, Aenys. Five years later, Visenya gave birth to Maegor (supposedly with the help of dark blood magics), who would go on to become the first Targaryen usurper. Originally from the Valyrian Freehold, the Targaryens were one of forty dragonlord houses who ruled over the lands with the help of their mighty dragons.
