Following the death of the King’s baby boy, the question of succession returns and Daemon is desperate to claim it. But he soon loses his grip on heir status when King Viserys shocks the realm and names his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir, instead. At first, he is unable to bond with a dragon, but his future is nothing short of significant, as he eventually manages to claim the dragon Vhagar, the biggest dragon alive.

Rhaenyra's marriage to Laenor ends in Episode 7, when she marries her uncle Daemon after Laenor's "death." The pair welcome two sons together during the six-year time jump before Episode 8. They're still going strong when the realm is thrown into conflict in the Season 1 finale, where she is named the rightful Queen days after her nephew Aegon has usurped the Iron Throne. Young Rhaenyra, known as "The Realm’s Delight," is a devoted daughter, a talented dragonrider, and a budding tactician. As the only child of the king, she would be the presumed heir if she wasn't a woman. Known as "The Rogue Prince," Daemon is the younger brother of King Viserys, and the presumed heir as of the start of HotD. He's an arrogant hothead who believes he would be a better king than his brother.

Rhaenrya & Daemon Targaryen – Not to be outdone by her father, Rhaenyra Targaryen marries her uncle Daemon Targaryen as her second marriage (his third). Both Rhaenyra and Daemon married the children of Corlys Velaryon (Laenor and Laena, respectively); Deamon had twin daughters, and Rhaenyra had three sons. However, when Laena died giving birth to a third child (a son), Daemon wasted no time having his niece Rhaenyra's husband killed, so that he could claim her as his own. Aegon is a common name for Targaryen sons, that comes up several times in the family tree. This Prince Aegon is the firstborn son of Viserys I and his second wife, Alicent Hightower. As the firstborn son of the king, a faction of lords want him to be named heir pretty much as soon as he's born, though Rhaenyra was named heir years prior.

We don't currently have any expectations that Daenerys will make an appearance in House of the Dragon, especially with it being set almost 172 years before she was born. In the end, House Targaryen fell from power entirely and Aerys was killed by his own kingsguard knight Ser Jaime Lannister to prevent the monarch from destroying King's Landing with wildfyre. Aerys II is a direct descendant of King Viserys I Targaryen through his daughter Rhaenyra. Lady Rhaena had hoped to get her mother's dragon Vhagar but was supplanted by Prince Aemond. Lady Laena Velaryon is the daughter of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and the older sister of Ser Laenor Velaryon. The second child of the couple, Ser Laenor has an older sister in Lady Laena Velaryon.

He dies of leprosy at the end of Episode 8, after which he's known by the moniker Viserys the Peaceful. Aegon was the first-born son of King Viserys and his wife, Alicent Hightower. His presumed ascent to the Iron Throne is challenged by his older sister, Princess Rhaenyra, who was previously designated as Viserys's heir. King Viserys knows that with no living male heirs (at least not at this point in his life), the crown will likely pass to Daemon if he doesn’t do something about it while he still can. Rather than see his short-tempered, impulsive brother take on a role he’s not at all suited for, Viserys surprises everyone by naming his daughter Rhaenyra (played by Milly Alcock) as his successor.

In order to become a dragonrider Rhaena will likely have to claim a dragon for herself, a harder task than simply bonding with a dragon whose egg was gifted to her in childhood. Unfortunately, Laenor’s sexuality seems to be the worst-kept secret in Westeros, so the parentage of his supposed children with Rhaenyra are constantly under scrutiny.
Married to his sister Rhaella, Aerys starts off as a promising king who does right by his subjects and kingdom. But many sorrowful events like miscarriage, and political troubles like being imprisoned and tortured by a rebelling lord, make him lose his mind for good. First we have Aemon Targaryen, whom we see in the flesh in his very old age, across the first few seasons of Game of Thrones. Having served as a Night’s Watch maester for years, people simply forgot he was even a Targaryen. Eventually, Laneor escapes his pretentious life by faking his death (following a plot set up by Daemon and Rhaenyra so they can marry), and flees across the Narrow Sea with his lover, Ser Qarl. A skilled warrior and rider of the dragon Seasmoke, Laenor notably has Velaryon blood and Targaryen heritage, making him a perfect suitor for Princess Rhaenyra.
The King got the kingdom through the War of the Ninepenny Kings, also known as the fifth Blackfyre rebellion led by Maelys the Monstrous, and even sought to lead his armies personally despite his fragile health. While Jaehaerys would be talked out of this, it demonstrates a certain mettle others would not have expected of their ruler. Following the inferno and the deaths of Aegon and his heir Duncan, Jaehaerys was crowned king.

Technically, Rhaenyra is Daenerys's sixth great grandmother and Jon's seventh great grandmother. That also makes Daenerys and Jon the direct descendants of Daemon, Rhaenyra's uncle/second husband.

Daeron II & Daenerys Targaryen – Aegon IV's children with his sister Naerys were both married off to Dornish suitors, forging the bond between Dorne and The Seven Kingdoms – even as Aegon's bastards rose to oppose them both. Daenerys and Maron Martell birthed House Martell; Daeron II and Mariah Martell started a line that would lead to the end of the Targaryens altogether...
